BIS Introduces Mandatory Labeling Rules for Lab-Grown Diamonds to Strengthen Consumer Trust

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has rolled out updated diamond labeling norms that bring India in line with global best practices. The move clearly differentiates natural diamonds from laboratory-grown diamonds, reducing confusion and reinforcing consumer confidence.

What’s Changed in the New Standards

Under the newly notified IS 19469:2025 standard, adapted from ISO 18323:2015, the word “diamond” can now be used only for natural diamonds. Any lab-grown stone must be clearly disclosed using approved terms such as “laboratory-grown diamond” or “laboratory-created diamond.”

The standards also ban misleading or outdated descriptors like fake, artificial, synthetic, or cultured. Even commonly used short forms such as lab-grown, lab-created, lab diamond, or LGD are no longer permitted on labels or certificates.

Full Transparency on Production Methods

BIS now requires complete disclosure of production techniques, including Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) and High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT). Any treatments or post-growth enhancements must also be clearly stated, ensuring transparency from origin to final product.

A Comprehensive Disclosure Framework

Developed by the BIS MTD 10 Committee, following an initiative by the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) and consultations with the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, the revised framework standardizes terminology and disclosure for:

  • Natural diamonds

  • Laboratory-grown diamonds

  • Treated diamonds

  • Composite stones

  • Diamond imitations

Industry Impact

An industry expert compared the move to hallmarking, noting that the new standards will remove long-standing confusion caused by inconsistent certifications. Kirit Bhansali, Chairman of GJEPC, highlighted that these norms enhance credibility across both natural and lab-grown segments and reinforce India’s leadership in ethical diamond trade practices.

Market Context

India’s jewelry market, valued at nearly $80 billion in FY24, is projected to grow to $225 billion by FY35, supported by strong domestic demand. India is now the world’s second-largest diamond jewelry market, with current demand around $10 billion, expected to double by 2030. Similar labeling norms already exist in developed markets, making this step essential for India’s global competitiveness.

Why This Matters

  • Removes ambiguity between natural and lab-grown diamonds

  • Protects consumers from misleading claims

  • Aligns India with international standards

  • Strengthens trust in India’s fast-growing jewelry sector

What It Means for Industry Professionals

For gems and jewelry professionals, the BIS norms are both a responsibility and an opportunity. Businesses that adopt transparent labeling and compliance practices early will gain a clear edge as consumer awareness grows.

Key Takeaways

  • Stay compliant: Understand and implement IS 19469:2025 standards

  • Build trust: Transparency is now the backbone of sustainable growth

  • Career opportunity: Expertise in compliance and ethical practices will be in high demand

  • Industry readiness: Knowing the difference between natural and lab-grown diamonds is now essential

These standards are more than regulatory changes. They serve as a roadmap for building credibility, protecting consumers, and shaping a responsible future for India’s diamond industry.
