The Design Problem No Parametric CAD Tool Has Ever Solved

Rhino can build jewelry.
MatrixGold can make it faster.
But neither can sculpt a goddess.

From Learning to Production

India's jewelry market has two distinct streams. The first is precision: stone settings, ring rails, weight calculations the world of Rhino and MatrixGold. The second is art: temple jewelry, deity pendants, bridal sculpted sets, antique filigree, and the kind of surface richness that has defined Indian jewelry for centuries. Parametric CAD has no answer for the second stream. ZBrush does.
ZBrush gives jewelry designers the ability to sculpt freely adding texture, carving surface detail, building organic forms, and creating the kind of work that has to be seen to be believed. And when the sculpt is complete, it connects directly to the parametric workflow: export to MatrixGold or Rhino, add the technical components, and go to 3D printing.
The ZBrush Digital Sculpting & Temple Jewelry course at J K Diamonds Institute is the only structured programme in Mumbai that teaches this entire workflow from first sculpt to production-ready file. With mentors who have done it commercially, and a curriculum that covers both the artistic and technical sides of digital sculpting for jewelry.

Pillar 01

Foundations & Core ZBrush Tools

Learn the ZBrush workflow from scratch. Build the sculpting fundamentals that every module depends on.

Master the essential tools, sculpting principles, and workflows needed to build detailed 3D forms.

  • ZBrush Fundamentals
    • Navigation and viewport controls — moving around the ZBrush canvas
    • Core brushes: Standard, Clay Buildup, Move, DamStandard, Smooth
    • Masking and Polygroups — isolating and organising parts of a model
    • Gizmo and Transpose tools — transforming and posing objects in 3D space
    • Subdivision levels — working at different levels of detail without losing form
    • DynaMesh — the foundation of freeform sculpting: remeshing as you add volume
    • Sculptris Pro — dynamic mesh sculpting for organic, continuous surface addition
    • Basic file management and UI customisation
  • Sculpting Fundamentals
    • Primary, secondary, and tertiary forms — the 3-level approach to building any sculpture
    • Silhouette design — reading and refining form from the outside in
    • Anatomy basics — understanding proportion, mass, and structure for figurative work
    • Facial proportions — essential for deity, character, and portrait jewelry work
    • Hard-surface sculpting fundamentals — clean edges and precise planes for mechanical elements
    • Reference gathering — building a reference library for temple jewelry and traditional motifs
    • 🔍 GEO/AEO: 'Facial proportions in ZBrush' and 'anatomy sculpting for jewelry' are queried by designers specifically researching deity and figurative jewelry work — naming these topics in module copy captures that traffic.
  • Intermediate ZBrush
    • ZRemesher — automatic retopology for cleaner, more production-friendly mesh structure
    • Retopology workflows — manual and guided retopology for production-ready models
    • ZModeler — polygon-level modeling for hard-surface and geometric jewelry components
    • Boolean operations — combining and subtracting objects non-destructively
    • IMM (Insert Multi Mesh) brushes — placing pre-built components like gems, prongs, and decorative elements
    • Curve brushes — creating flowing borders, wire rope textures, and organic outlines
    • Fibermesh — adding hair, fur, or fine filament detail (useful for animal jewelry motifs)
    • UVs — preparing models for texturing in external applications
    • Polypaint and materials — painting colour and surface material directly onto the 3D model
    • Materials and rendering — basic BPR rendering setup for presentation images

Frequently Asked Questions

ZBrush is a digital sculpting software that allows designers to create organic, artistic, and highly detailed 3D forms using brush-based tools unlike parametric CAD software which builds from precise geometric operations. In jewelry, it is used for temple jewellery motifs, deity figures, organic surface texture, filigree detail, and any design that requires the kind of artistic freedom that Rhino or MatrixGold cannot provide.
No prior CAD or sculpting experience is required. The course starts from ZBrush fundamentals interface, navigation, and core brushes and builds progressively to advanced production techniques. Students from completely non-design backgrounds, as well as experienced CAD professionals adding ZBrush to their skill set, complete the programme successfully.
Rhino is a parametric CAD tool used for precise, geometric jewelry construction ring rails, stone settings, shanks, and production-accurate geometry. ZBrush is a digital sculpting tool used for organic, artistic, and ornamental work temple motifs, deity figures, textured surfaces, and complex sculptural forms. Most professional jewelry designers use both. J K Diamonds Institute offers both as separate courses and as part of the Combined Professional CAD-CAM Programme.
Yes and this is the unique strength of ZBrush compared to any other jewelry CAD tool. The J K Diamonds ZBrush programme includes a dedicated focus on temple jewelry, Indian deity forms, traditional motifs, and the ornamental vocabulary of India's bridal and religious jewelry market. No other ZBrush course in India formally teaches this material.
The course covers 9 modules across a 3-month programme. It is available on-campus at J K Diamonds Institute, Mumbai, and live online via the Learnathon platform. It is structured for students with no prior ZBrush experience, and graduates are portfolio-ready by the end of the programme.
